It’s most common to to counsel college graduates on how to prepare their resume and ace the interviews they’ll face as they’re heading into the workforce, but one man thinks it may be time to change this way of thinking.
Dr. Vijay Eswaran, the Executive Chair and co-founder of QI Group Ltd. says graduates need to change their focus from looking for work to creating the job opportunities themselves.
Eswaran says with the changing in work culture and the shift in the kinds of markets becoming available, more and more countries are starting to teach the idea of creating a business and other employment opportunities as opposed to simply consuming available jobs. He says more and more graduates need to be bold enough to take the risks that come with business startups.
Vijay Eswaran comes from a Malaysian family that was fairly well off as his father worked for the government in the Ministry of Labor.
His family always reinforced the ideas of putting others above self, and also were strict observers of dieting and and various spiritual exercises.
Eswaran continued many of those into his life as an adult and after he launched his career.
He graduated in 1984 from the London School of Economics and earned an MBA in 1986 from Southern Illinois University.
He worked for several tech companies such as Synaptics and IBM, but he soon decided to test the waters of multilevel marketing companies and decided he wanted to bring this business model into the Asian markets. Eswaran came back to Malaysia and helped expand a company into the Philippines branch, and while there he met Joseph Bismarck with whom he decided to partner and start an offshoot from this company.
Eswaran and Bismarck founded QI Group in 1998 in Hong Kong, and they had to raise much of the capital themselves as the economic times were very hard and many banks were unwilling to lend.
But their hard work paid offand they began a large network of direct selling and e-commerce as well as investing in vacation properties and real estate.
Vijay Eswaran and Bismarck also started the RYTHM Foundation which has given back to impoverished communities throughout the world. Eswaran is a frequent speaker at many universities and the author of “In The Sphere Of Silence.”
